{"id":1621,"date":"2024-02-05T20:14:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T18:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hukkacraft.fi\/resource-bank"},"modified":"2026-08-28T23:11:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T20:11:33","slug":"material-bank","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hukkacraft.fi\/en\/material-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Material Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each material has its own unique properties, and on this page I will explain a little about the properties of the different materials to make it easier for you to choose the most suitable one.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin of materials<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I order materials from Finland and other EU countries. Where possible, I also use materials\/components manufactured in the EU. Remmi also offers Finnish materials.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leather<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leather is a durable and versatile material. It can be used to make clothes, shoes, gloves and almost anything else. I use vegetable tanned leather in my products. Tanning means that the raw leather is cleaned, treated and chemically processed to make it more durable, so it doesn&#8217;t deteriorate. Vegetable tanning uses different plants or parts of plants to extract their tannins for use in the process. These plants include oak, mimosa, sumac and sometimes even coffee. Vegetable tanning is the oldest method of tanning leather, with roots going back as far as two thousand years. Italy is one of the leading countries for leather processing and is home to the best tanneries in the world. I myself use almost exclusively Italian leather in my products.        <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remmit<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Textile straps can be made of different materials. There are some essential differences between the materials, which you can read more about below. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Polypropylene<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most common materials used for straps and webbing. It is a synthetic material whose key characteristics include light weight, reasonably good durability, and affordability. Thanks to its low cost, it is a common material used, for example, in backpack straps. PP straps are slightly thicker than other strap materials, but they are also a bit softer. PP fibers do not absorb water and are also buoyant. UV resistance is generally good. Standard polypropylene webbing can typically withstand a load of approximately 200 kg.        <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Polyester<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polyester (PES) is a durable material. Belts made from it can withstand significantly higher loads than PP belts and also have better abrasion resistance. Its heat resistance is also significantly better than that of polypropylene (melting point approx. 250 vs. 175). Polyester straps can be thinner than PP straps, yet still heavier. Polyester has good UV resistance. Polyester absorbs very little water, but it is denser than water, so the strap does not float. Depending on the manufacturer, polyester webbing can withstand loads of a few hundred kilograms. For example, Finnish-made mil-spec grade polyester webbing can withstand a load of approximately 700 kg.         <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Polyamide (PA, Nylon)<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polyamide\u2014commonly known as nylon\u2014is an extremely durable material. Belts made from it can withstand the same or, in many cases, greater loads than polyester belts. It is also a slightly flexible material and has the best heat resistance of these three materials (melting point approx. 270 degrees). Its UV resistance is not always quite on par with that of polyester, and it absorbs moisture. Like polyester, polyamide is denser than water and therefore sinks. When wet, it also stretches somewhat, which makes it unsuitable for securing heavy loads.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nylon is a trademark of DuPont that has entered common parlance. Cordura, on the other hand, is a brand name <a href=\"https:\/\/invista.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/invista.com\/\">owned by Invista <\/a>, primarily for polyamide fabric manufactured according to their specifications. Invista also manufactures the fibers used in nylon fabric. Nylon straps are also extremely durable and, depending on the manufacturer, can withstand loads of several hundred kilograms. For example, the German-made polyamide webbing we use is rated to withstand a load of approximately 1,000 kg.     <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastic parts<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plastic parts are made of many different materials, the most common being acetal and nylon. Acetal has the advantage of a wide temperature resistance and excellent bending memory (return to the same position). Acetal quick connectors are often identified by a distinct &#8220;click&#8221; sound. Nylon has the advantage of better resistance to high temperatures; otherwise, parts of similar size are almost equivalent in terms of resistance. Our acetal products have been used to make better buckles such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2m-italia.com\/\">2M <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itwnexus.com\/\">ITW Nexus<\/a>.    <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Metal parts (rivets, locks, etc.)<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The metal parts I use are made of steel, brass and zinc alloy. Often the metal parts are coated with another metal or paint. The durability of coatings varies and some last longer than others. Naturally, I also use my own products in everyday use and have been satisfied with the quality of the parts I use and the durability of the coatings.   <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Locks<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the locks I use are zinc alloy (usually e.g. Zamac, velvet) which is a durable and light material. It is not a tough material like steel, but when the load exceeds its strength it tends to crack, while steel bends accordingly. Silver-coloured rings are currently made of stainless steel. <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rivets and others<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rivets are steel or brass, as are the D-links or O-rings.<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zippers, fabrics, threads<\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I use almost exclusively high-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/ykkeurope.com\/\">YKK<\/a> zippers. The outer fabric is usually polyester, Cordura, or a similar material.
